Grinding, shaking, a crooked door or a loud bang? Learn the 9 most common garage door warning signs, what causes them and when to call for repair.

Crooked garage door that came off its track before repair

Most garage door failures give warning first. Catching these signs early keeps a small repair from turning into an emergency.

1. A loud bang from the garage

Usually a broken torsion spring. Do not open the door; the spring is what makes it light enough to lift. See our spring guide.

2. The door is crooked or off its track

A lift cable slipped off its drum or a roller came out of the track. Stop using the door right away; it can fall. Cable and track repair fixes it.

3. Grinding, squealing or scraping

Worn rollers, dry hinges or bent track. Nylon rollers and a proper lube usually quiet it down.

4. The door shakes or jerks

Often worn rollers, loose hardware or springs that are out of balance.

5. It moves slowly or stops partway

Weak springs, a struggling opener or misaligned tracks. An opener should not be doing the heavy lifting.

6. The opener hums but nothing happens

A stripped drive gear, a broken spring or a disengaged trolley.

7. The door reverses before it closes

Dirty or misaligned photo-eye sensors, or the close-force setting needs adjusting. Wipe the sensor lenses and check that the lights on both are steady.

8. Frayed cables or rusty parts

Salt air near Biscayne Bay corrodes cables, springs and bearings. Frayed cables can snap without warning.

9. Gaps, sagging sections or daylight under the door

A worn bottom seal or bent sections let in water, heat and pests, and can weaken the door in high wind.

Quick safety test you can do

Once a month, close the door with the opener and place a flat piece of wood (like a 2x4 laid flat) under it. The door should reverse when it touches the wood. If it does not, stop using the opener and get it serviced.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use a garage door that is making noise?

Light squeaks usually just need lubrication, but grinding, banging or a crooked door means something is wrong. Stop using it and have it checked to avoid a bigger failure.

Why does my garage door go back up when closing?

Most often the photo-eye sensors are dirty, blocked or misaligned. Clean the lenses and make sure both sensor lights are steady. If it still reverses, the opener force settings may need adjusting.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

A professional tune-up once a year is a good rule, and more often for doors near the coast that face salt air.

We serve North Miami and nearby cities including North Miami, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Miami Gardens, Miami Shores, Sunny Isles Beach, Biscayne Park, Bal Harbour and more.
