What happens when a door comes off track

Down each side of the door runs a column of rollers, and each roller rides inside a steel track. When one or more of them pop out, the door can no longer travel evenly. It jams, twists, sags at a corner or hangs at an angle, and the opener may keep shoving against it.

We take the door from jammed to running again. First it is made safe, then the rollers go back where they belong, and then we repair the track, roller, hinge or cable that let them escape. That last part is what keeps the door from slipping out again a week later.

We do this work anywhere in Miami-Dade and Broward, North Miami Beach and Coral Gables included. Same-day service is available for many off-track calls.

Why doors leave their tracks

Rollers don't jump out for no reason. Something pushed the door sideways, took away the support on one side, or gave the rollers room to escape. These are the usual causes:

  • A car bumper or a rolling trash bin hits the track near the floor and bends it.
  • A lift cable snaps or unwinds from its drum, and one side of the door drops.
  • Worn or broken rollers slip out, often at the curve.
  • Loose track brackets let the two tracks spread apart until rollers fall out.
  • A bike or a storage box blocks one side while the opener keeps driving.
  • Storm wind pushes on the door. FEMA warns that wind can shove a garage door inward or twist it right off its tracks.

Early warning signs are easy to miss. A door that stops short of the floor, rubs at one spot or reverses partway down may already be binding in the track. Our page on why a garage door won't close goes through those signs.

How we put an off-track door back

We start by clamping the door so it can't fall or shift. If a cable is loose or a spring has broken, we take the tension off before moving anything. Then we open the track a little where needed and guide each roller back inside, one at a time.

Next comes the real repair. A bent track is straightened, or the kinked piece is swapped. Matching parts take the place of broken rollers and cracked hinges, and a cable that came off goes back on its drum with the right tension. Loose brackets get tightened so the tracks hold their spacing.

Finally we run the door up and down by hand, then with the opener, reset its travel limits and line up the safety sensors. It should move smoothly, sit level and close all the way.

Don't force a door that's off track

An off-track door is held up by fewer rollers than it should be, and it can drop or swing out of the opening. Don't push it up or pull it down, and don't press the opener button: the motor will only drive the door further out of line.

Keep people and cars away from it. Don't try to hammer rollers back in or pry the track open while the door is raised. Leave the red release cord alone too, because on a door that is partly open and off track, releasing it can bring the door down.

If your car is stuck inside, call (786) 349-6912. We tell you on the phone what is safe to do until the door is secured.

Fixing the cause so it stays on track

Pushing the rollers back in only solves half the problem. If the track is still bent, a roller still worn or a bracket still loose, the door comes off again, often at the same spot. So the visit includes track repair, roller and hinge repair or cable repair whenever the door needs it.

Now and then a car hits the door hard enough to crack panels or fold the door itself, and a door like that may not be worth putting back. We say so plainly and can price a new garage door next to the repair, so you can compare.

Cities we cover for off-track doors

We set doors back on track in North Miami Beach, Miami Gardens and Miami Lakes in the north, in Hialeah, and farther south in Coral Gables. Broward cities such as Hallandale Beach and Hollywood are on the list too. In a tight garage the lower track sits right beside the bumper, so we check it on both sides at every visit. The repair carries our 1-year labor warranty.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I try to pop the rollers back in on my own?

We advise against it. A door that's off track is only partly supported, and the springs and cables are often pulling unevenly. Prying or hammering with the door up can let it fall. Leave it where it is and call (786) 349-6912.

Is it safe to close a door that came off its track?

No. Running the opener or pulling the door down drives the rollers further out and can bend the door or the track. If the door has to stay open for now, keep everyone out from under it until it is secured.

Why does my door keep coming off on the same side?

Something on that side is still wrong: a bent or loose track, a worn roller, a cracked hinge, or a cable longer than its partner. Putting the rollers back without fixing it means the door slips out again. We find that cause before we pack up.

Can a door that a car hit be put back on track?

Often, yes, if the damage is mostly to the track and rollers. We straighten or swap the bent track pieces, fix the rollers and hinges, and check the cables. If the door's panels are cracked or folded, we tell you that a repair won't hold.

Will the opener work normally once the door is back on track?

Usually, yes. After an off-track repair we reset the opener's travel limits, check the force setting and line up the safety sensors. If the opener was damaged by shoving against the jammed door, we tell you and explain that repair too.
