Rollers and hinges: where most door noise starts

Rollers are the small wheels on stems that run inside the tracks along both edges of the door. Hinges join the door's sections and let it fold around the curve of the track as it opens. Together they carry the door through every trip, so they wear a little each time it moves.

When rollers wear flat or their bearings dry out, the door grinds and judders. When a hinge cracks or its screws work loose, the door pops, clunks or sags between sections. We repair both, near the bay in Miami Beach and well inland in Miami Lakes and Doral.

What each noise usually means

Listen to the door through one full trip. The sound, and where it starts, usually tells you which part is worn.

  • Grinding or rumbling: worn roller bearings, or rollers dragging instead of turning.
  • Squealing: dry hinge pins or roller stems that need lubrication.
  • A pop or clunk at the curve: a cracked hinge, or a roller with a flat spot.
  • Shaking or wobbling: rollers loose in the track, or a hinge that has lost screws.
  • Rattling: loose hardware on the door or on the track brackets.

Rollers come in two common kinds. Steel rollers are tough, but they clatter in the track, and steel ones without ball bearings wear out sooner. Nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings run much quieter.

Rust causes trouble of its own. Near the coast, salt air pits roller stems and hinge pins, and a rusty part stops turning freely. Then the door drags, and the opener and springs work harder to move it.

How we repair rollers and hinges

We look at every roller and hinge, not just the noisy one. Worn, wobbling or rusty rollers come out and matching ones go in, usually as a full set so the door runs evenly. Cracked or bent hinges are changed for the same type, and loose hinge screws are tightened.

The bottom rollers are different. They sit in the bottom brackets, which also hold the lift cables under full spring tension. We take that tension off before working on them, and they are never a job for a homeowner.

Once the parts are sound, we lubricate hinge pins, roller bearings and the springs with a garage door lubricant, then run the door and listen. A door that was loud before should now run noticeably quieter. The work is backed by our 1-year labor warranty.

What you can check safely

You can watch and listen. Run the door while you stand clear, and note where the noise starts: at the bottom, at the curve or near the top. Look for rollers that tilt in the track, hinges with cracks around the screw holes, and rust on the stems.

Keep the tracks clean and dry, but don't grease them: grease gathers grit and makes rollers skid instead of roll. Never loosen or take off the bottom brackets, and leave roller changes to us, since the whole door is under spring tension.

When the noise is coming from somewhere else

Not every noise is a roller or a hinge. A squeaking coil can be a dry spring, a slapping sound can be a loose opener chain, and a scrape on one side often means a bent track. If the track is out of line, that is track repair. If rollers have already slipped out, the door needs off-track repair.

A hinge that keeps cracking can point to a section of the door that is cracking around it. When the door itself is giving out, we say so honestly, and a new garage door may make more sense than another round of parts.

Rust by the bay, wear from daily use

Near salt water, rollers and hinges rust sooner. For houses close to the shoreline, roughly the first 3,000 feet, FEMA recommends stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. At least one door maker's care guide also asks for more frequent cleaning by the sea. Our salt air care guide explains simple rinsing and cleaning.

On Miami Beach, in North Miami Beach, along the bay in Miami and by the ocean in Sunny Isles Beach, we check stems and pins for rust on every visit. Away from the water, in Doral, Miami Gardens and Broward's Miramar, rollers mostly wear from use: a door that opens and shuts all day flattens them sooner.

A yearly tune-up catches dry hinges and flat rollers before they get loud.

How it works

  1. Listen to the door runWe run the door and find where the noise or shaking starts.
  2. Check every roller and hingeWe look for flat, tilted or rusty rollers and for cracked or loose hinges, then explain what needs doing and the cost.
  3. Fit matching partsOnce you approve, we fit matching rollers and hinges and tighten any loose hardware.
  4. Lubricate and testWe lubricate the moving parts, check the balance and test the opener's safety reverse.
FAQ

Common questions

Are nylon or steel rollers better for my door?

Nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings run quieter, and the wheel itself won't rust, which helps near the coast. Steel rollers with bearings stand up to heavy doors and hard use. We match the rollers to your door's weight and how often it runs, and explain the choice before we start.

What should I use to lubricate rollers and hinges?

A spray lubricant made for garage doors, used lightly on hinge pins and the bearings of steel rollers. Skip thick grease, which traps dust, and keep lubricant out of the tracks. If the door still grinds after that, the rollers are probably worn out.

Can a cracked hinge let the door come off its track?

Yes. A cracked hinge lets the roller it holds tilt, and a tilted roller can climb out of the track, usually at the curve. It can also let the door sag between sections. Stop using the door if a hinge is visibly split, and call (786) 349-6912.

Can rusty rollers be cleaned instead of swapped?

Light surface rust on a stem can sometimes be cleaned off and lubricated. Rollers whose bearings have rusted tight, or whose wheels are flat or cracked, won't run smoothly again, so we swap those. We show you the worn parts before any work.

Is a noisy door a sign something is about to break?

Not always, but it is worth a look. Grinding from worn rollers mostly wears out the door and opener over time, while a sudden pop or bang can mean a cracked hinge or a spring starting to fail. A noise that changes suddenly is the one to call about.
